The Supreme Court of India in its decision dated 11th January, 2022, in Smruti Tukaram Badade v. State of Maharashtra (Miscellaneous Application No 1852 of 2019 in Criminal Appeal No 1101 of 2019), has emphasized the need to create a safe and protective environment for vulnerable witnesses while recording their evidence. Vide the said order, the Supreme Court and has appointed Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal as Chairperson of the Committee to devise and implement an All India Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centre (VWDC) Training Programme as well as to engage with the High Courts for creation of infrastructure for VWDCs.
